The summer holidays are just around the corner, and for many of us, that means planning days out, road trips, or even full-on staycations. And of course, no family trip feels complete without our furry companions in tow!
As more and more of us choose to take our pets away on holiday, many popular destinations are becoming much better equipped to cater for pets. From dog-friendly pubs, cafés, and restaurants to dog-friendly beaches and hotels, there is so much for your four-legged friend to enjoy.
However, we know just how stressful travelling with pets can be, especially if your pooch is a nervous passenger. From transporting food to keeping your dog cool and comfortable during the journey, there is a lot to consider.
That’s why we’ve put together a list of top tips for you to try when travelling with your four-legged friend this summer. As well as our travel tips, we also have a number of fantastic foods that are brilliant for travelling with and feeding on the go.
Plan Pet-Friendly Stops
Whilst a lot more places now allow dogs, not everywhere is as pet-welcoming as we’d like, so make sure to plan your route with regular stops at dog-friendly spots. Services with outdoor seating or green areas are ideal – perfect for leg stretches, toilet breaks, and a quick drink. If you’re booking accommodation, check whether they allow pets, and whether there are any extra fees or rules.
Feeding on the Go
Travelling often presents all sorts of challenges when it comes to feeding – from keeping the food fresh in the car, to storing it when you arrive. It can be especially difficult if you feed raw.
That’s why finding a food that meets all of your pooch’s needs, without causing issues while on the go, can be extremely helpful. Our brand-new Alpha Spirit Realfood Stews for Dogs provide a solution to all of those usual problems! The stews come packaged in compact tins with a patented OpenVac seal, which keeps the food fresh, even when stored at ambient temperatures.
The food is all-natural and made with up to 97% meat and fish, giving your pup all the nutrients they need to fuel the exciting adventures ahead. Forget worrying about travelling with large pet food sacks or finding freezer space for raw food – check out our Realfood range today.
In addition to our all-new Realfood, our collection of Alpha Spirit Complete Dog Food – Semi-Moist also provides an on-the-go solution. The food is made with 85% meat and fish, and it is cold-pressed, grain-free, and made with only natural ingredients. To keep it extra fresh, the food is available in 9kg boxes containing 45 individually portioned packets, allowing you to take as much or as little as you need. What’s more, the packaging is 100% recyclable.
Pack the Essentials
Just like you, your pet needs their travel kit. Make a checklist that includes:
- Lead, collar, harness, and ID tag
- Water bottle and collapsible bowl
- Food and treats (don’t forget enough for the whole trip!)
- Poo bags
- Favourite toy or blanket (for comfort)
- Pet first aid kit
Keep Them Cool
Summer heat can be tough on pets, especially in the car. Never leave them alone in a parked vehicle, even with the windows open. Use a sunshade, keep the air-con on, and consider a cooling mat or vest. Always carry plenty of fresh water and offer it regularly.
Get Them Used to the Car
If your pet isn’t used to travelling regularly, try a few short trips before the big day. Reward calm behaviour and make the car a positive space with treats or a chew toy. For longer journeys, keep your pet secure – either in a seatbelt harness, travel crate, or boot guard – and never let them sit on your lap while driving.
Check Local Vets and Emergency Info
Before you set off, look up the nearest vet to your destination, just in case you need them. Some apps or websites even let you save emergency contacts ahead of time. It’s one of those things you’ll (hopefully) never need, but you’ll be glad you checked if you do.
Travelling with pets can be a joy when it’s done safely and thoughtfully. With a bit of prep, you can make some brilliant summer memories together – muddy paws, wagging tails, and all!
