Grain-Free: Is it the best option?

When it comes to dry dog food, whether a food is grain-free or not has become one of the big talking points when it comes to dog nutrition. Is grain-free automatically better or is it simply another option?

When a dog food is ‘grain-free’, what does it actually mean?

Grain-free dog food is one that does not contain any traditional cereal grains such as

  • Wheat
  • Barley
  • Oats
  • Maize
  • Rice

Instead, these formulas typically contain alternative carbohydrate sources such as

  • Sweet Potato
  • Peas
  • Lentils
  • Chickpeas

An important distinction is that a grain-free food is not carbohydrate-free, the carbs are just taken from another source.

Why would a dog food have grain?

Grains are included for practical and nutritional reasons. When they are properly formulated and cooked, traditional grains can provide a digestible source of energy, contribute fibre for good digestive health, and supply essential nutrients including B vitamins and minerals.

In pellet production, grains also play a functional role in creating structure and consistency in the finished kibble.

It is important to note that grains are not automatically ‘fillers’ in dog food. In the grand scheme of things, the quality of the overall recipe – including protein sources, fat levels, and nutritional balance – matters more than whether a food contains grains.

When might grain-free be the right choice?

Grain-free dog food isn’t automatically better but, in some cases, it might be the right option for your dog.

True grain allergies in dogs are relatively uncommon, but they can occur. If a dog has been diagnosed with a specific grain sensitivity through veterinary advice or an elimination diet, then shopping for grain-free options is recommended.

In other situations, it may come down to the individual digestive response. Some dogs seem to be able to tolerate certain carbohydrate sources better than others. For example, a dog may produce firmer stools or experience improved comfort on a grain-free formulation. This isn’t because grains are inherently harmful though, it’s because dogs (like humans!) process different ingredients in different ways.

Finding the right fit for your dog

At Sabre Pet Food, we understand that no two dogs are the same – this is why we offer a variety of carefully selected options to suit differing preferences and dietary approaches.

For owners searching for a completely grain-free approach, we have Alpha Spirit and YDOLO. These formulations offer a high meat percentage without traditional cereals.

If you’d prefer an alternative grain, our DARF offers a high meat percentage but with millet – which is a naturally gluten-free grain, chosen for its gentle digestive profile.

And for dogs who thrive on a more traditional grain-inclusive diet, our Primal Spirit offers a balanced formulation with familiar carbohydrate sources.

Rather than following a trend, we believe in offering choice – so you can go for something that is best for your dog’s individual needs.

If you’re unsure which is the best option for you, reach out to us today and we’re always happy to help guide you!
