Keeping Your Furry Friend Safe During Summer

With Summer approaching, the UK temperatures are set to rise and it’s important to keep in mind some tips and tricks to keep your dog safe in the hot weather. Our furry friends are more susceptible to heat related illnesses due to their body temperature regulation limitations. To make sure your dog stays happy and safe, these are some good tips and tricks to keep them safe.

1. Let’s start with the basics, it’s very harmful and dangerous for a dog to be left in a parked car. Inside of a car, the temperature can rise quickly and reach harmful levels even with the windows left open. Unless you are lucky enough to own a Tesla with dog mode, it’s a good idea to leave or drop your companion off at home where they can be in a well-ventilated environment with access to shade.

2. Exercise is important for a dog’s health, but during the Summer it’s best to change your dog’s routine. Shorter walks during the cooler times of the day is a great way to still make sure your dog is getting the exercise they need, but ensuring they’re safe. Indoor activities are also a viable way to get your dog exercising like treat puzzles or toy hunts.

3. Avoiding hot surfaces is also very crucial to keep your dog safe. Pavements, sand, and concrete all absorb the suns heat up very quickly, and as these are common surfaces it’s important to keep tabs on the temperature of these surfaces. A quick and easy way to do it is by placing the back of your hand on the ground and hold it there for a couple of seconds, if it gets too hot and you must remove your hand, it’s too hot for your furry companion!

4. The availability of fresh water and shade is very key as this will help them to cool down and rehydrate. Throwing in a couple of ice cubes into the water bowl will be a good treat for your dog and help them to cool down.
Following these easy tips can help your dog to be safe and happy during the Summer and hot weather.
